The Unread Cheryl

Well, it's obvious now that my blog reaches about 2 people.

I only know this because they email me personally about something I've typed, rather than comment on my blogs. That's fine, although commenting can be anonymous. And I guess I shouldn't be bothered by it, because then we get to talk about more than what was written in one blog.

I'm still trying to figure out why it bothers me that nobody reads my blogs. Well, it seems as if nobody reads them. Quite often I will refrain from typing something offensive to somebody because I'm sure they might read it. But will they? Does anyone?

Now I'm not trying to be daring young mom. (see www.daringyoungmom.blogspot.com) Or any other infamous and dedicated blogger. But I do notice that on others' blogs, people do comment. A lot. Well, a lot more than on mine (which, at most, is maybe 2 comments every 7 posts).

Ahh, the pity party I'm putting myself through. ~sigh~ Well, I guess it really doesn't matter if nobody reads my personal blogs. The reason I do it is to get my thoughts out there--to write them down and just rid myself of excess emotion and baggage --and maybe hope that someone out there understands a little bit of what I go through every day.

Now that is the big blog question -- If you knew nobody was reading, would you still blog. I had a person ask this to the founder of Times and Seasons and to me last weekend. We both said yes. For me, my girlfriends and I were already having many of these internet conversations. I just thought other people might like to hear them too. For a solo blog it is a little different. If you started it out as a "journal" like thing, then it shouldn't really matter. But you still might censor what you say because you never know who might stop by.

But, that being said, knowing that people read and enjoy or find value in what you have to say is definitely rewarding and makes you want to blog more.

FYI - At Tales, we have started linking to blogs run by people who comment. - it's under Meet More Moms. Maybe you'll pick up a few more readers?

I wouldn't want to be infamous either. Seriously. That would be lame. :) Email me and we can brainstorm - if you want to drum up more readers. I think Carrie's comment is really true. It's hard not to care who's reading but I guess it comes down to why we're doing this in the first place.

I'd also suggest getting a site meter. Then you can see how many people are actually reading. It may be more than you think and it IS nice to know someone's out there.

I love that question, carrie --if nobody was reading....

I like your idea about a site meter, daring one. I'll be emailing you soon...

Thanks, guys. I guess I was just bothered that if people DID read the blog, they'd email me rather than comment on the blog. I'd love to see people commenting and discussing --especially amongst family members and friends who know me. I figure that's a great way to keep in touch, too --but I guess I did do this just to get my thoughts on "paper" and to think things through. So, it has been worth it --especially now that I know it's not the end of the world if nobody comments...still lovin' that meter idea though... :)
